Full CV
I am Professor in Social Science, with a joint appointment between the Division of Social Science and the new Division of Public Policy.   Previously, I was Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University of Oxford.  I have also been an adviser in Population and Development at the UK Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology and a Research Scholar at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Austria. I received my education at the University of Cambridge, with a PhD in historical demography.
My research focuses on population and policy issues in Asia. In particular, I work on the causes and consequences of low fertility and population ageing.
I have held a number of research grants to study a wide variety of topics relating to demographic change and public policy. These include population policy in Hong Kong; fertility preferences in Beijing and Taipei; sex-selective abortion in Nepal and youth transition in Europe and Asia. I currently hold a grant to explore the relationship between urbanization and childbearing around the world.
At UST, I teach course a Common Core course on Population as well as Research Methods courses in both social science and public policy.

I am also the Associate Director of the Leadership in Public Policy Executive Education Program and serve on the Executive Committee of the Institute for Emerging Market Studies.
