The Division of Social Science currently houses 29 faculty members with specializations across six disciplines: Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Science, Technology and Society, and Sociology.  Like every division of excellence, we are committed to rigorous research in addition to providing comprehensive training for students.  The Division was ranked as the top social science unit in Hong Kong in the Research Assessment Exercise 2006 conducted by the University Grants Committee (UGC) and as the best social science department in Asia in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2011.

We offer one of the best training programs for students who are interested in pursuing qualitative and quantitative social science research. Our research postgraduate programs equip students with top-notch skills to carry out primary research and provide them with a broad spectrum of analytical perspectives for critically understanding a variety of issues and phenomena in the modern world.  Not only do students gain theoretical and methodological insights from coursework, they also learn how to carefully select important research topics and gather valuable sources related to their chosen field of research.  Many of our PhD graduates are now holding academic positions at Academia Sinica, Peking University, Renmin University, Zhongshan University, the National University of Singapore, and the Chinese Academy of Social Science. 

Together with the Division of Humanities, we introduced an undergraduate major in Global China Studies in 2011 which offers students an opportunity to gain theoretically informed and empirically grounded knowledge of China, Hong Kong, and other Chinese societies around the world.
